Amazon driver filmed trying to steal customer’s cat as he delivered their parcel
An Amazon delivery driver was confronted by a furious customer after he was spotted on camera apparently trying to ‘steal’ his cat off his doorstep.
CCTV footage shows the courier drop a package on a customer’s doorstep before picking up the man’s 13-year-old pet and walking off.
But after spotting the alleged attempted theft the homeowner ran outside to confront the man beside his van.
The incident was recorded outside the customer’s home in Chingford, Essex on Monday.
Amazon have since confirmed that the man, who works for a delivery service provider, will no longer be allowed to deliver for the company.
In the clip, the courier is seen walking up the driveway of a customer to hand over their small package.
Standing on the doorstep, the man notices Yoshi, a friendly half-Siamese, half-Burmese cat approaching him.
The cat sits down next to the driver, and allows the man to pet him for a few seconds.
But as the driver finishes scanning the package, he puts it down on the doorstep and picks up the cat before walking off.
Seconds later the homeowner appears, and runs down his drive to confront the man.
The cat owner, who lives with his wife and two children, can be heard saying: ‘Why are you trying to take my cat and put it in your boot?’
But the driver only replies ‘nothing’ before adding ‘I said sorry’ when the clip ends.
‘I had never seen this driver before as Amazon always sends different drivers,’ the owner, who wants to remain anonymous, told MailOnline.
‘When I opened the door I could see him bending over putting the cat close to his van which I thought was strange, but when I came around the corner I saw him put the cat in the van, that’s when I confronted him.
The owner believes the suspected attempted theft was motivated by money: ‘He’s an expensive looking cat, silver with blue eyes, a lot of Siamese have green eyes but he has bright blue eyes’.
‘On the day I first asked him to give me his manager’s number, but I don’t think it was his manager I spoke to because he didn’t seem apologetic when I called.’
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were contacted following an incident on Monday, 25 January by a man reporting that a delivery driver had attempted to steal his cat.
‘There have been no arrests; enquiries into the investigation continue.’
Amazon have now confirmed the man, who is not employed by them, will no longer be allowed to deliver parcels on their behalf.
An Amazon spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We have very high standards for our delivery service providers and how they serve customers.
‘We are taking this matter seriously and have reached out to the customer to make this right. The delivery associate will no longer be delivering on behalf of Amazon.’
