In the Summer of 2020 this video of Black on White violence went viral.

At the start of the film clip, we see a men’s clothing section in the department store with clothes neatly organised on display. The victim, a middle-aged White male wearing glasses stands tending a store display with the muscular Black Male standing wearing a black vest behind him out of his view.

The attack starts with a hard left handed sucker punch delivered to the Manager’s left cheek from behind. He can be heard to moan as he falls to ground. As the confused victim tries to get up he asks ‘What are you doing that for?’. He then turns onto his back and puts his hand out to protect himself as the attacker stands over menacingly poised to attack. “Don’t touch me N*gg*r says the Black Male, then delivers a right handed punch to his face while saying “Quit touching me Nigger”. The poor victim struggles to move away on his back while the attacker follows him around all the time staring down into his face with fists clenched, and says “Stop moving” “I’m sorry” says the Manager as he continues trying to move away from the violent attacker who again says “stop touching me Nigger” and he delivers another punch to the victim’s jaw. The video cuts out.

The attacker was later revealed to be Michigan resident Damire Palmer, 18, who was in the department store with his brother Damarquay Palmer, 22, also is known as Rapper FT Quay, looking at clothes. After jokingly asking the passing store assistant, who was on the phone, if the shirt would fit him, his brother said he overheard the Manager saying “no one, just some N*gg*r. The brother then pulled out his phone to capture his brother’s response as detailed above.

Macy’s stood by their employee and Andrea Schwartz, senior director of media relations for Macy’s, told a local paper “All the materials from the evening have been reviewed and it is clear that the attack was unprovoked.”

During the later trial in August 2020, Damire Palmer revealed he had been lied to by his brother about the Store Manager using the N word.

The generous Store Manager Victim agreed to let the attacker be treated as a youthful offender rather than risk a 10 year jail sentence for the assault and Palmer in September was given just 2 years probation for the aggravated assault thanks to the victim’s kindness.

There are a few point to raise about this case: Firstly, the older brother tricked his younger brother and made no effort to stop the resulting beating – making him largely responsible for what happened, so rightfully should have also been charged. Secondly, the attacker makes no effort to talk to the Store assistant to hear his side of the story before delivering what is a massive terrifying and completely over-the-top attack. Thirdly he attacks a weaker, smaller and older man without warning from behind – the actions of a cowardly bully. And most importantly from the site’s perspective this could also be categorised as a racially motivated attack. If the Manager was Black and had said what the brother said he had – there would probably have been no attack or response, but because the victim was White – the attacker immediately responded with a level of violence that suggest an intense hatred of White people and seemed to revel in the terror he brought to the White victim.
